What is low iron glass and why should you use it ?
There are two common kinds of glass one is low iron and the other is clear. Their properties differ because their ingredients aren’t the same which makes there use more appealing for certain design projects.
What is low iron glass
Low-iron glass is a type of high-clarity glass that is made from silica with very low amounts of iron. This low level of iron removes the greenish-blue tint that can be seen especially on larger and thicker sizes of glass. Low-iron glass is used for aquariums, display cases, sneeze guards, windows, and other applications where clarity is desired. Fallingwater, a house designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and built in 1939, was one of the first houses to use low-iron glass for windows.*
While regular clear glass does not have substantially high iron content, it is higher than low iron glass. Due to this higher iron content, clear glass has a greenish tint to it. While “clear” is in the name, clear glass is actually not the clearest type of glass you can get.
Glass is a multi-purpose material which not only improves the quality of lighting, but it can also make a space feel bigger. Color-matching matters, and low-iron glass has better light transparency. Whether it’s in your kitchen, bathroom shower doors, a wine cellar, guard rails using a low iron glass can create a higher quality outcome. Even a simple sneeze guard can be made more appealing with low-iron glass. With a higher quality transparency, that balance of light and clarity, means that it will help your food look more appetizing. Customers want to get a clear mental picture of what they are about to eat, and improving that experience is key.
Low iron glass can be worked and can be used virtually anywhere regular glass can. Whether remodeling your bathrooms, kitchen or improving a restaurant appearance, you should consider using low iron glass because it allows for better color neutrality, helps you create space and allows natural colors to play out.
